Jessica stood a foot behind her father, even with her sword out she still felt uncomfortable. She knew she could hold her own in a fight, but that was hand to hand. Weapons were a different matter. If she hadn’t been caught up in the excitement of everything, she would have realised sooner that swordplay was not her thing. She would have been much happier and more comfortable with a broom handle. After all, she had grown up having light sabre fights with her brother and killing all the broom handles. As much as she loved the character of Xena, weapon wise, she had to admit she was more of a Gabrielle.

Her uncle and his followers hadn’t yet made a move to start anything, and everyone under her father was under strict instructions to stay within the safety of the trees. Looking over towards the castle, she could understand why. There was nothing a person could take cover from.

“And so it begins.” She heard her father say just as a bolt of light caught her attention, a red wall suddenly stood in front of all the warriors, an electrical charge running through it. It would have been an incredible sight to see, under different circumstances.
